Aminoethylpiperazine is a liquid with moderate vapor pressure (5.2 Pa at 20 °C); however, due to its miscibility with water, has low potential to volatilize from water. The substance has a very low octanol-water partition coefficient (log Kow = -1.48), which also inidcates a low potential for uptake in aquatic organisms. Further data onthe analogues piperazine (CAS 110-85-0) and diethylene triamine (CAS 111-40-0) support this conclusion: Indeed, the bioaccumulation factor for both substances was determined in the carp (Cyprinus carpio), where the measured BCF was < 3.9 L/kg for piperazine and values ranged from < 0.3 to 6.3 for diethylene triamine. Aminoethylpiperazine possesses three amino groups, which will occur as charged species (cationic) under pH conditions encountered in the environment. This cationic character is responsible for its expected high affinity for adsorption to soil/sediment, by a cation exchange mechanism. The substance is not susceptible to hydrolysis or direct photolysis in the aquatic environment. Biodegradation is expected to be the dominant process affecting fate of this substance in the environment. Although previous screening tests of ready and inherent biodegradability have shown little or no degradation, these tests appear to be confounded by toxicity/inhibition to the inocula by the high concentrations tested.
