A reliable invertebrate short term toxicity study is, available for the parent acid of trisodium citrate, citric acid 77-92-9. It is considered appropriate to read across the short term toxicity to invertebrates results for trisodium citrate 68-04-2 because under conditions relevant to ecotoxicity assessment, the sodium salt and citric acid are expected to be fully dissociated. Sodium is not expected contribute to the toxicity of the substance being a ubiquitous element.
A reliable 48 h EC50 value of 2055 mg/L has been determined for the effects of citric acid on immobility Daphnia magna. The study reflects the lowest value that is available for this endpoint.
Calculations of the LC50 for trisodium citrate:
The lowest (48 h) EC50 for citric acid is 1535 mg/L, which is equivalent to 1535 * 1.34 = 2055 mg/L of trisodium citrate
(using MW(trisodium citrate)/MW(citric acid) = 258.1/192.9 = 1.34)
A reliable 48 h EC50 value of >50 mg/L has been determined for the effects of citric acid on substrate reattachment abilities of the zebra mussel D. polymorpha. The study does not present a conclusive EC50 (> value), therefore it has not been selected as key for the marine environment.
Other studies available for this endpoint with trisodium citrate indicate that the substance is not acutely toxic.
