First-aid measures

Description of first aid measures

General advice: Call a physician immediately. First aider needs to protect himself.

If inhaled: IF INHALED: Remove to fresh air and keep at rest in a position comfortable for breathing. If breathing is irregular or stopped, administer artifical respiration. Call a physician immediately.

In case of skin contact: Wash off with polyethylene glycol and afterwards with plenty of water. Take off contaminated clothing and shoes immediately. Call a physician immediately.

In case of eye contact: In case of eye contact, remove contact lens and rinse immediately with plenty of water, also under the eyelids, for at least 15 minutes. Call a physician immmediately.

If swallowed: Clean mouth with water and drink afterwards plenty of water. Induce vomiting if person is conscious. Call a physician immediately.

Notes to physician

Hazards: Inhaled corrosive substances can lead to a toxic oedema of the lungs. Liver and kidney injuries may occur.

Symptoms. Shortness of breath, Diarrhoea, Cough, Irritation of mucous membranes.

  Treatment: Treat symptomatically.

Fire-fighting measures

Extinguishing media

Suitable extinguishing media: Carbon dioxide (CO2), Dry powder, Sand, Foam, Water spray

Extinguishing media which must not be used for safety reasons: Do not use a solid water stream as it may sctter and spread fire.

Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture

Special exposure hazards arising from the substance or preparation itself, its combustion products, or released gases: Gaseous hydrogen chloride (HCl). Carbon oxides. Phosgene. In use, may form flammable/explosive vapour - air mixture.

Advice for firefighters

Special protective equipment for firefighting: Personal protection through wearing a tightly closed chemical protection suit and a self-contained breathing apparatus.

Additional information on fire-fighting: Remove all sources of ignition. Pay attention to flashback. Vapours are heavier than air and may spread along floors.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures

Personal precautions: Keep people away from and upwind of spill/leak. Use personal protective equipment. Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing.

Environmental precautions

Environmental precautions: Prevent spreading over a wide area (e.g. by containment or oil barriers). Suppress (knock down) gases/vapours/mists with a water spray jet. Do not flush into surface water or sanitary sewer system. Do not let product enter drains. Vapours are heavier than air and may spread along floors. Risk of explosion.

Methods and material for containment and cleaning up

Methods for cleaning up: Contain spillage, and then collect with non-combustible absorbent material, (e.g. sand, earth, diatomaceous earth, vermiculite) and place in container for disposal according to local / national regulations (see section Disposal considerations). After cleaning, flush away traces with water.

Handling and storage

This substance is handled under Strictly Controlled Conditions in accordance with REACH regulation Article 17 (3) for on-site isolated intermediates and, in case the substanxce is transported to other sites for further processing, the substance should be handled at these sites under the strictly controlled conditions as specified in REACH regulation Article 18 (4). Site documentation to support safe handling arrangements including the selection of engineering, administrative and personal protective equipment controls in accordance with risk-based management systems is available at each Manufacturing site.

Written confirmation of application of Strictly Controlled Conditions has been received from affected Distributor and Downstream Manufacturer/User of the Registrant's intermediate.

Precautions for safe handling

Advice on safe handling: Refill and handle product only in closed system. Avoid breathingvapors, mist or gas. Avoid formation of aerosol.

Advice on protection against fire and explosion: Keep away from heat and sources of ignition. Take precautionary measures against static discharges. Vapours may form explosive mixture with air.

Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities

Storage space and container requirements: keep containers tightly closed in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place. Keep away from heat. Keep away from open flames, hot surfaces and sources of ignition.
