- EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
- Deviations:
- no
- GLP compliance:
- yes (incl. QA statement)
- Key result
- Test procedure:
- other: Preliminary test of EU A.10 method
- Remarks on result:
- other: The test item liquified. Neither inflammation nor propagation was recorded.
- Interpretation of results:
- GHS criteria not met
- Conclusions:
- The substance was concluded from the EC A.10 test not to be flammable in contact with a flame.
- Endpoint:
- pyrophoric solids
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
- Endpoint:
- substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water

Preliminary test:
In a first trial the test item liquified. Neither inflammation nor propagation was recorded. This was repeated in a second trial showing identical results. No main test was performed.
Description of key information
Neodymium trinitrate is concluded to be not flammable. From day to day handling, neodymium trinitrate is concluded not to have pyrophoric properties nor to be flammable in contact with water.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Flammability:
- non flammable
Additional information
Flammability:
An experimental study performed under GLP compliance and in accordance with EU A.10 method was flagged as a key study and assigned a Klimisch score of 1. It revealed that neodymium trinitrate is not highly flammable.
Pyrophoricity and flammability in contact with water:
Such hazards are excluded for neodymium trinitrate based on the absence of structural alerts and on the knowledge from use and handling.
Justification for classification or non-classification
Flammability
Neodymium trinitrate was concluded to be not highly flammable in a study performed according to EU A.10 method. In this study, a preliminary test was run to determine whether combustion propagated along 200 mm of a train within a 4 minutes test period. According to EU A.10 method, if the substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the four minutes test period, then the substance should not be considered as highly flammable and no further testing is required. This is exactly what happened for neodymium trinitrate.
UN N.1 method is normally required to determine the classification under CLP. Like for EU A.10, UN N.1 method starts with a preliminary test which is run to determine whether combustion propagates along 200 mm of a train within a 2 minutes test period. If the substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the two minutes test period, then the substance should not be classified as a flammable solid and no further testing is required. Because the observation period during the preliminary test of the available EU A.10 study (4 min) is longer than the one preconized for the preliminary test of the UN N.1 method (2 min), it can be concluded that a similar observation would have been done by applying UN N.1 method which would have led to the same conclusion (i.e. flammable properties are not expected and there is no need to go further with a main test).
Based on the above, neodymium trinitrate can be safely regarded as a non flammable solid under CLP.
Pyrophoricity
In the daily use and handling of neodymium trinitrate during which continuous exposure to air can occur, no spontaneous ignition is observed. The absence of structural alerts furthermore confirms that it is highly unlikely that neodymium trinitrate has pyrophoric properties.
Flammability in contact with water
Under conditions where neodymium trinitrate is in contact with water no ignition and/or liberation of flammable gases is observed. The absence of structural alerts furthermore confirms that it is highly unlikely that neodymium trinitrate is flammable in contact with water.
