Eisenia fetida
The study was conducted under static conditions for a duration of 14 days. The test item was applied once at the study start. Forty test organisms divided into 4 replicates were tested per concentration, solvent control, and controls in artificial soil. The study was conducted with nominal concentrations of 0, 10, 32, 100, 320, and 1000 mg/kg dry weight of artificial soil.
No significant mortality was seen in the concentrations 10-320 mg/kg after 14 days of exposure. The concentration 1000 mg/kg resulted in a mean mortality of 45% after 14 days. The LC50 value > 1000 mg/kg dry weight of artificial soil.
The percent loss in live weight of the surviving adults came to a maximum of 4% in the solvent control group and to 4 -34% in the treatment groups. In the control group there was no loss in live weight. A statistically significant difference in the live weight was found for the test concentrations ≥100 mg/kg when compared to the control.
Pathological symptoms and changes in behavior of the worms were reported after 7 and 14 days of exposure. Pathological symptoms were found for concentrations ≥ 100 mg/kg.
The NOEC, with respect to mortality, live weight and other symptoms was 32 mg/kg dry weight in artificial soil. The LOEC was 100 mg/kg dry weight in artificial soil.
Caenorhabditis elegans
The effects of the test item on the development of the free living soil nematode, Caenorhabditis elegans, were determined in a water sediment system. Test duration was 72 hours. A limit test at 1000 mg/kg dw was selected. Fifty nematodes were exposed to the limit concentration. Thirty nematods were tested in an untreated sediment control. A solvent control (tert.-methyl-butylether) and a liquid control were also treated with two replicates (10 nematodes per replicate) for each control treatment. The 72-hour NOEC was determined to be > 1000 mg/kg dw.
