According to Annex X, endpoint 9.5.1, the study needs to be conducted if the results of the safety assessment indicate the need to further investigate the effects of the substance on sediment organisms.

The dissolution/transformation study with P-slag showed that no significant quantity of potentially toxic elements will be solved in water, so there will not be any significant exposure of aquatic organisms in an aquatic toxicity study. Thus the equilibrium partitioning method using PNECaqua cannot be applied. Following the Integrated Testing Strategy (Guidance Document R.7b, figure R.7.8-8) at least one long-term sediment test should be available.

To evaluate the potential toxicity by oral uptake of particles mixed in the sediment, it is proposed to perform a study on the insect Chironomus sp. (A study to establish the sensitivity for the taxon including worms is proposed under the terrestrial toxicity.) For the benthic test organism the exposure will be both by the water phase and by oral uptake of the sediment. This test in intended to confirm the absence of significant exposure and toxicity of P-slag (limit test with 1000 mg/kg dw). The results will be used to validate the hypothesis that the bioavailability of the elements in P-slag is low.
