Additional information

Acute tests evaluating the toxicity of methyldiacetoxyisopropoxy silane (CAS No. 329039-38-5) to aquatic organisms from three different trophic levels are available. Due to the rapid hydrolysis of the substance in water, an assessment of the toxicity of two of the main degradation products (acetic acid and isopropanol) for which information is available has been performed as well (for the sake of completeness). Methyldiacetoxyisopropoxy silane (and products) is slightly toxic to fish (LC50 (96 h)= 1517 mg/L (nominal)) and algae (EC50 (72 h)= 931.3 mg/L (nominal)). The substance and degradation products did not cause any adverse effect on aquatic invertebrates mobility, resulting in a EC50 (48 h) > 1000 mg/L (nominal), whereas a hormetic response was observed in aquatic microorganisms after exposure, showing that the substance acts rather as a substrate than a toxicant (EC50 (3 h) > 500 mg/L (nominal)). Considering the above information, methyldiacetoxyisopropoxy silane (and degradation products) can be considered as slightly toxic to non-toxic to aquatic organisms.
