- Executive summary:
The presented information is reported on the EPA database ECOTOX Knowledgebase - ECOTOX: Aquatic report:
In a 96-hour acute toxicity study, the cultures of Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata were exposed to ortho-phthalaldehyde. The range of concentrations is not reported in the secondary source. The test design was static and in accordance with the OPPTS 850.5400 guideline. The EC50 value based on abundance is 184 µg/L.
Further information is not available on the EPA homepage and the access to the original study is not possible. Therefore, the results from this toxicity study are classified as supplementary information.

Description of key information
The short-term toxicity testing on Daphnia magna showed that the most rigorous classification is necessary for the test item, i.e. Aquatic Acute 1 (H400) and Aquatic Chronic 1 (H410) following the provisions laid down in the CLP Regulation (Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008). Therefore, further testing would not contribute to additional benefit of scientific knowledge.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- EC50 for freshwater algae:
- 184 µg/L
Additional information
Effect values on Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata are available on the EPA homepage and reported as supplementary data. As the original study is not accessible the data published on the EPA homepage are reported in the present dossier.
In a static growth-inhibition study, algae were exposed for 96 hours to the test substance. An EC50 of 184 µg/L was determined.
