Homogeneity: homogenous - Key result
- Decomposition:
- yes
- Decomp. temp.:
- >= 71.27 °C
- Remarks on result:
- not determinable
- Remarks:
- test item decomposed before boiling
- Conclusions:
- Beginning decomposition was observed at 71.27 °C (344.42 K) before boiling point.
- Executive summary:
The boiling point of the test item was determined via DSC (differential scanning calorimetry) in a combined study according to OECD 102/103 .
In both DSC measurements one endothermic event was detected, this was evaluated with the onset function and can identified as melting point under these circumstances with:
53.57 ± 0.30 °C (326.72 ± 0.30 K)
These values are the means of two independent determinations.
In further process after melting an unsmooth baseline was visible and was probably supposed as a sign of decomposition. This was evaluated with the event marker function and
beginning of decomposition should be stated as
71.27 °C (344.42 K).
No boiling point of the test item can be determined under these circumstances as the test item decomposed before boiling.
Reference
Pre-test for melting range
The capillary tube containing the test item was set into the block at 19.3 °C. The block was heated until melting started. The temperature was noted at which the first signs of melting of the test item were observed. When the substance was completely melted, the temperature should be noted again. All observations of the Pre-test for melting range are presented in the following table.
Table Results of the pre-test
Observations |
Temperature |
The test item shrivelled together |
Since 80 °C |
The test item expanded upwards |
Since 105 °C |
No test item at the bottom visible (further expanded upwards). The test item getting glossier, original is slightly matt. |
Since 120 °C |
The colour getting darker (yellowish) |
Since 140 °C |
Performance of heating, interpreted decomposition (melting under decomposition) |
Up to 155 °C |
The test item was solid and stayed yellowish |
After cooling down |
Interpretation
In Pre-test for melting range a colour and a physical state changes were observed which might be a signs for decomposition.
After consulting with the sponsor the first DSC measurement should be performed from 15 to 175 °C. Therefore the Security Pre-test for the DSC instrument was performed up to 420 °C with and without perforated aluminium lid.
For the crucible with perforated aluminium lid the test item was black and came out from the perforated position. For the crucible without perforated aluminium lid the crucible was bloated.
In both DSC measurements one endothermic event was detected.
The endothermic event was evaluated with the onset function and can be identified as melting point.
In the further process after melting an unsmooth baseline was visible and was probably supposed as a sign of decomposition. This was evaluated with the event marker function.
The observations of pre-test and the physical state change of the test item in crucible after DSC measurement confirm decomposition.
Presentation of results
For the calculation of the values of the mean and the standard deviation, only the values of melting point were taken into account.

Validity
As the deviation between the two evaluated determinations (melting point) was < 0.5 K the result can be considered valid.
Description of key information
Beginning of decomposition at 71.27 °C (344.42 K) before boiling (Method OECD 103; respectively to EC Guideline EU A.2; differential scanning calorimetry (DSC))
Key value for chemical safety assessment
Additional information
The boiling point of the substance was evaluated according to the OECD Guideline 103 and EU Method A.2. No boiling point was determined as beginning of decompoisition was observed during the study at
71.27 °C (344.42 K).
