Description of key information
The substance belongs to a group of Natural Complex Substances (NCS) : UVCB sub-type 3, where the source is biological and the process is refinement (See ECHA Guidance on Identification and naming of substances under REACH); such as: exudates, resinoids and concretes that are well-known to be very difficult to analytically assess. These complex UVCB substances contain a large number of constituents with different volatility and solubility (mostly low solubility); the composition can be widely unknown and their physical state ((mostly) solid(ish) and/or extremely viscous resins) leads to further difficulties for testing.
Considering the complex nature of the test item (green to brown sticky highly viscous liquid to pasty solid UVCB substance with partial knowledge of the composition), physico-chemical properties of the substance were determined from experimental testing when possible. Some endpoints were waived, based on the experience in handling, testing and use of the substance and on the chemical structure of the known constituents. We also considered waiving based on technical issues due to the complex nature of such UVCB substance, especially when the information obtained from testing was not relevant or of practical use and irrelevant for subsequent assessments. According to information available, no hazard was identified with regard to physical properties based on Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 (CLP regulation) and GHS.
Additional information
Summary of relevant physico-chemical properties:
Endpoint (method) |
Data |
Appearance at 20 °C and 1 atm. (visual) |
green to brown sticky and highly viscous liquid to pasty solid |
Melting/Freezing point (OECD 102/EU A1, visual and DSC method) |
Melting point < 4.9°C with potential delay of melting till approximately 18°C. Note that the substance is flowable at a temperature of 73°C. |
Boiling point (OECD 103/EU A2, DSC method) |
Boiling of the major part of the substance was stated as 147.81 °C to 309.07 °C (420.96 K to 582.22 K). Decomposition of the substance was observed by DSC from approximately 311.93°C (585.08 K) (exothermic deviation of the baseline). For information purpose, the last event was evaluated for decomposition energy at 103.59 J/g between 325.8 °C and 450°C. |
Relative density (OECD 109/EU A3, pycnometer method with a replacement liquid) |
1.0780 ± 0.0004 g/cm3 at 20.0 ± 0.2 °C D20/4 = 1.0780 |
Granulometry (data waiving) |
study scientifically not necessary (not granular / powder) |
Vapour pressure (OECD 104/EU A4, static method) |
1172 Pa at 20 °C and 1526 Pa at 25 °C (interpolation) Note that the result obtained on this kind of substance should be largely influence by small amounts of volatile constituents and these values don't represent the major part of the substance. Therefore the result should be considered with caution when used for subsequent assessment. |
log Kow (data waiving) |
Waived based on technical issue and limited knowledge of the composition of the substance. QSAR estimation on known constituents of the registered substance were provided, when possible. |
Water solubility (data waiving) |
Waived considering the complex nature of the test item, the information obtained from testing is considered as not relevant or of practical use for subsequent assessments |
Surface tension (data waiving) |
Waived considering that surface activity is not the intended use of the substance (i.e. not a desired property). |
Auto-Flammability (EU A15 / DIN 51794 / data waiving) |
Auto-ignition temperature: 350°C (989.2 - 1027.6 hPa). Self-ignition temperature waived based on the MP of the substance < 160°C |
Flash-point (EU A9)
Flammability (N.1 readily combustible solids)
Flammability water&air (data waiving)
Self-heating substances/mixtures (data waiving) |
154°C at 1013 hPa => NOT classified under CLP & GHS. No ignition is observed when the substance is heated with the flame of a gas burner for two minutes. NOT flammable solid (for CLP and UN regulations). Waived based on experience in handling and use and chemical structure of known constituents of the substance. NOT flammable if contact with air or water Waived based on the physical state (viscous liquid to solid with a low melting point < 160°C) NO self-heating substance anticipated. |
Explosive properties (data waiving) |
Waived based on experience in handling, use and testing of the substance and chemical structure of known constituents or group of constituents. LOW potential for explosive properties |
Oxidising properties (data waiving) |
Waived based on technical issue and chemical structure of known constituents of the substance or group of constituents. LOW potential for oxidizing properties |
self-reactive substances (data waiving) |
Waived based on DSC results obtained during boiling point determination: Decomposition energy < 300J/g. LOW potential for self-reactive properties. |
Slight variations are possible with composition (UVCB substance).
