Additional information

Data on the acute toxicity of calcium bis(metaphosphate) to aquatic invertebrates are not available. The assessment was therefore based on studies conducted with the analogue substance tricalcium bis(orthophosphate) (CAS 7758-87-4) and calcium hydrogenorthophosphate (CAS 7757-93-9) as part of a read across approach, which is in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex XI, 1.5.

The acute toxicity of tricalcium bis(orthophosphate) and calcium hydrogenorthophosphate (CAS 7757-93-9) to aquatic invertebrates was investigated in a study following OECD guideline 202 (Kim et al. 2013). The studies were conducted as a limit test under static conditions. Daphnia magna were exposed to a nominal test substance concentration of 100 mg/L for 48 hours. The mean measured substance concentration of tricalcium bis(orthophosphate) was 5.35 mg/L. For calcium hydrogenorthophosphate a mean messure substance concentration of 2.75 mg/L was determined. Mortality or symptoms of intoxication were not observed for both substances. At test termination an EC50(48 h) >5.35 mg/L (nominal: EC50(48 h) >100 mg/L) based on the mean measured concentration of tricalcium bis(orthophosphate) was determined. Whereas for calcium hydrogenorthophosphate an EC50(48 h) >2.75 mg/L (nominal: EC50(48 h) >100 mg/L) was reported. Based on the study results for the read across substances the assessed substance calcium bis(metaphosphate)is considered not acutely toxic to aquatic invertebrates.
