Description of key information
Two experimental studies indicate similar levels of water solubility and are sufficiently documented to be considered as reliable with acceptable restrictions. In addition, handbook data are also available as supporting information with limited documentation and reliability.
In an experimental study, an amount of test substance solubilized in water at 25°C was measured at about 1700 ppm (1680 ppm) with a standard deviation = 500ppm. This value can be considered as a default value because part of the solubilized test substance must be desorbed at the meantime sample was extracted. This study did not follow a standard guideline and its GLP status is not known, but it can be considered adequate for assessment. The value of 1680 mg/L water solubility at 25°C is selected as the key value for chemical safety assessment. Nevertheless, considerable variability in results was observed; 1700mg/l and 1900 mg/l figures seemed more consistent and it should be noted that they were only achieved in closed system in equilibrium with a gas phase containing 1 atm test substance.
Another experimental determination of the water solubility of difluoromethane was performed. The method consisted of bringing a measured volume of liquid into contact with a known volume of gas, at a given temperature and pressure. After an equilibrium state is reached, the change in the gas volume yields the amount of gas dissolved in the liquid, and hence the solubility. The water solubility of the substance was found to be 1900 mg/L at 20ºC (1570 mg/L at 25ºC). These results are consistent with the other key experimental study.
As for the supporting information, the water solubility of difluoromethane was reported in Yaws CL, Yang HC, Hopper JR and Hansen KC handbook, which is a peer reviewed handbook, at 4400 mg/l at 25°C. No information is given concerning the method that was used. According to another handbook source, the water solubility of the test substance was estimated using the Ostwald solubility coefficient, and was found to be 3640 - 3650 mg/L at 25ºC.
Based on all these results, difluoromethane can be considered as soluble (1000 - 10000 mg/l) in water. The exact water solubility value is challenging to estimate due to the tendency of the test substance to partition into the air compartment.
