Description of key information
Vapour pressure for phosphinic acid has been determined according to standard guidelines on its solid form with GLP compliance and on its 60% aqueous solution without GLP compliance.The vapour pressure of the test item has been determined to be 0.43 Pa and <2600 Pa at 25 ºC for the solid and the liquid form, respectively. Since the vapour pressure of water is 3173 Pa at 25°C it is considered that the vapour pressure measured on the 60% aqueous solution is driven by the water evaporation and the value on the solid form is retained for the chemical safety assessment of phosphinic acid.

Additional information
One key value of the vapour pressure of phosphinic acid has been determined on its solid form according to method A4 of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 and the method 104 of the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals. The test is GLP compliant without deviation from the guidelines. The vapor pressure was determined using a vapor pressure balance and a total of seven runs were completed for the main sequence. Equilibrium with regard to vapor pressure was assessed to have been reached over the final four runs so they were used to calculate the definitive vapor pressure value for the test item. The vapor pressure of the test item has been determined to be 4.3 x 10-1Pa at 25 ºC.
A supportive study is available on phosphinic acid 60% in aqueous solution according to method A4 of Commission Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 and the method 104 of the OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals but non GLP compliant.
The vapor pressure of the test item has been determined to be < 2600 Pa at 25 ºC but as the vapour pressure of water is equal to 3173 Pa at 25 °C it is believe that this value is due to the evaporation of water which occurs first. Phosphinic acid is not expected to evaporate from the solution and will remain in its solid non volatile form.
Therefore, the vapour pressure measured on the solid form is retained for the chemical safety assessment of phosphinic acid.
