Monitoring data of Diglyme in river Rhine


Concentrations of Diglyme in the river Rhine are monitored regularly by the State office „Landesamt für Natur, Umwelt und Verbraucherschutz Nordrhein-Westfalen“ and different organissations (IKSR, WAP, INGO, RIWA). Background concentrations of Diglyme in the river Rhine are between 0.15 and 0.35 µg/L. Diglyme peak concentrations were observed in irregular intervals (median 2.39 µg/L, max 6.4 µg/L). According to the monitoring report of the State Office an acute toxicity for the biocenosis of the river Rhine is not expected even at the elevated concentrations. The State Office is also not expecting a threat for the production of drinking water.


 


The Concise International Chemical Assessment Document 41 (World Health Organization, Geneva, 2002) reports that Diglyme was detected in surface water in the Dutch parts of the river Rhine at concentrations ranging between 0.1 and 0.3 µg/L (1978; five samples), 0.03 and 0.3 µg/L (1979; five samples), and 0.5 and 5 µg/L (1985; six samples) (Morra et al., 1979; Linders et al., 1981; KIWA, 1986)
