Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

The test item was tested for its biodegradability using the CO2 Evolution Test as per OECD Guideline no. 301B. 
The test item was tested at the concentration of 33.33 mg/L of mineral medium (equivalent to 16.67 mg of TOC/L) along with inoculum controls, toxicity control and positive control. The CO2 released was measured on the 3rd, 6th, 9th, 14th, 19th 24th and 29th day after the initiation of the test. There was 23.97% degradation of reference item during the treatment period. While the percent degradation of reference item was 100.05 and that of the toxicity control was 45.09 at the end of the test.
Based on the pass levels (60% of biodegradation in 10 -day window period), the test item was considered as non-biodegradable as there was only 23.97% degradation achieved during the test period.

A reliability rating of 1 was assigned to the key study, according to the criteria of Klimisch, 1997 as the study was conducted in accordance with recognised guidelines and GLP.
