Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

melting point/freezing point
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
September 5-11, 1991
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: Well conducted GLP study, according to Eu and OECD guidelines, purity mentioned.
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.1 (Melting / Freezing Temperature)
Version / remarks:
September 1984
Deviations:
no
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 102 (Melting point / Melting Range)
Version / remarks:
May 12, 1981
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Type of method:

Melting / freezing pt.:
134.8 °C
Atm. press.:
101 325 Pa
Decomp. temp.:
138.8 °C
Remarks on result:
other: the substance decomposes immediately after the melting process, mp is above the SADT.

None of the stages as outlined above were observed.

Observations

At approximately 383 K (110°C), the test substance consistency started to change.

The test substance melted at approximately 417 K (144°C). The test substance changed from a white solid into a yellow liquid.

With increasing temperature, the test substance colour changed gradually from yellow into orange/brown.

At 408.0 K (138.8°C), the test substance showed the formation of gas (formation of bubbles and foam, test substance raised in the tube). The test substance changed from a white solid into a yellow liquid.

After cooling, the test substance remained yellow.

RESULTS

The determination of the melting point/melting range of DI-(4-METHYLBENZOYL)-PEROXID (INTEROX-PMBP) was performed in duplicate, using an Electrothermal melting point apparatus.

The melting temperature of DI-(4-METHYLBENZOYL)-PEROXID (INTEROX-PMBP) was determined to be 408 K (134.8°C).

At this temperature, the test substance changed from a white solid into a yellow liquid. This change in colour indicates decomposition immediately after the melting process.

The yellow colour remained after cooling down.

In conclusion, the melting point of

DI-(4-METHYLBENZOYL)-PEROXID (INTEROX-PMBP) is 408.0 K (134.8°C).

DI-(4-METHYLBENZOYL)-PEROXID (INTEROX-PMBP) decomposes immediately after the melting process.

Conclusions:
The melting point of bis(4-methylbenzoyl)peroxide is 134.8°C and the substance decomposes immediately after the melting process. MP is above the SADT.
Executive summary:

The determination of the melting point/melting range of DI-(4-METHYLBENZOYL)-PEROXID (INTEROX-PMBP) was based on EEC-Directive A.1 "Melting point/Melting range" (1984) and on OECD Guideline no. 102 "Melting Point/Melting Range" (1981), using the capillary method.

The melting point of bis(4-methylbenzoyl)peroxide is 134.8°C and the substance decomposes immediately after the melting process. MP is above the SADT.
