Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information
The evaluation was made based on the study carried out according to OECD Guidelines for Testing of Chemicals, " Ready Biodegradability: Manometric Respirometry Test", Procedure 301F, adopted July 17, 1992. EEC guideline C.4. Determination of "Ready" Biodegradability: Manometric Respirometry (Method C.4-D); Publication No. L 383 A/207-211, Dec. 29, 1992.
Small Vinyl Ester did not reach the pass level of 60% for ready biodegradability in the Manometric Respirometry Test within the 10 day window or after 28 days of incubation. Therefore it cannot be termed as readily biodegradable.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Biodegradation in water:
- under test conditions no biodegradation observed
Additional information
Some raw data from chemical analyses are missing in the report, toxicity control and abiotic sterile control incubations are not conducted. Alternative equations used for determination of the Theoretical O2 demand (ThOD) are described in detail under " Any Other details on materials and methods". Small Vinyl Ester data like e.g. water solubility, vapour pressure or adsorption characteristics are not described in the report. Information on toxicity to bacteria is not described.
The biodegradability of Small Vinyl Ester was calculated based on data on O2consumption obtained by GC-analysis of air samples taken at regular intervals during the 28 d. test period. The Biodegradability was 21% after 28 days as compared to an theoretical O2 demand (ThOD) calculated on the basis of the molecular composition of Small Vinyl Ester. The biodegradation reached 21% after the end of the 10 -day window. Some biodegradation of Small Vinyl Ester was observed after a lag phase of 1 day.
The procedure control contained 100 mg/l sodium benzoate, reaching 84% biodegradation after 14 days, confirming the validity of the inoculum and the test conditions.
Limited water solubility of Small Vinyl Ester interfered with assessment of the biodegradability through measurement of DOC elimination.
