To assess the biodegradation potentiel of the registered substance, one key study is available.

In this study, the ready biodegradability of the registered substance has been determined by the Manometric Respirometry Test according to the OECD Guideline 301F, EU Method C.4 -D in compliance with GLP. A nominal concentration of 100 mg/L of test substance was introduced in the system containing fresh activated sludge from a biological waste water treatment plant treating predominantly domestic sewage. The curves obtained with the reference substance alone and with the test substance plus the reference substance show no toxic effect of the test substance to the micro-organisms at the test concentration. The test substance undergoes 80% biodegradation after 28 days in the test conditions. The 10-day window criterion is also fulfilled (13% biodegradation on day 3 and 65% on day 13). The repeatability validity criterion (not more than 20% difference between replicates) is fulfilled for the flasks containing the test substance. Therefore, the test is considered valid. Degradation of sodium benzoate exceeds 40 % after 7 days and 65 % after 14 days: the activity of the inoculum is thus verified. In conclusion, under the test conditions, the test substance should be regarded as readily biodegradable according to this test.
