First-aid measures
Description of first aid measures
- Inhalation: If breathing difficulties, dizziness, or light-headedness occur when working in areas with high vapour concentrations, remove victim to fresh air. If victim experiences continued breathing difficulties, keep patient warm and at rest, and seek medical attention. If breathing stops, begin artificial respiration and seek immediate medical attention.
- Skin contact: If this product comes into contact with the skin, remove contaminated clothing and wash with soap and water. Seek medical attention if irritation persists. Wash contaminated clothing before re-use.
- Eye contact: If this product comes into contact with the eyes, flush with large quantities of water for several minutes, whilst gently holding the eyelids open. Seek medical attention if irritation persists.
- Ingestion: If this product is swallowed, DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Give small quantities (<250 ml) of water
to drink. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Seek immediate medical attention
Most important symptoms and effects, both acute and delayed
- Skin contact: There may be mild irritation at the site of contact. Prolonged or repeated contact may result in defatting of the skin, causing dryness and cracking.
- Eye contact: There may be irritation and redness.
- Ingestion: There may be irritation of the throat. ]
- Inhalation: Vapour/mist may cause symptoms of drowsiness, dizziness, mental confusion. High concentrations may result in central nervous system depression, and loss of consciousness.
Indication of any immediate medical attention and special treatments needed
- Symptomatic treatment as required.
Fire-fighting measures
Extinguishing media
- Suitable fire extinguishing media: Alcohol resistant foam. Dry chemical powder. Carbon dioxide. Use water spray to cool containers.
Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture
- Prevent entry into drains and watercourses. Fire-fighting run-off water should be contained.
Advice for fire fighters
- Wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus and thermal protective clothing as appropriate.
Accidental release measures
Personal precautions, protective equipment and emergency procedures
- Isolate the spill area and keep unnecessary personnel away. Eliminate all ignition sources. Ensure adequate ventilation. Wear suitable protective clothing including gloves and eye protection. See section 'Exposure controls/personal protection' for further details.
Environmental precautions
- Prevent further leakage or spillage. If large quantities of product enter waterways or sewerage system, inform appropriate authorities.
Methods and materials for containment and clearing up
- Small spills: Remove all ignition sources. Use non-sparking hand tools. Absorb spillage in a non-combustible absorbent, e.g. sand or vermiculite, and place in a suitable, labelled container for disposal.
- Large spills: Remove all ignition sources. Use non-sparking hand tools. Contain spill and cover if possible to reduce evaporation. Absorb spillage in a non-combustible absorbent, e.g. sand or vermiculite, and place in a suitable, labelled container for disposal. Wash spill site thoroughly with water and detergent.
Handling and storage
Precautions for safe handling
- Avoid contact with all ignition sources, including hot surfaces. Ensure lighting and electrical equipment are not a source of ignition. Take precautions to avoid electrostatic discharges, such as grounding (earthing) of containers and equipment. Vapours are heavier than air and may accumulate in low lying areas and below ground areas such as ducts and sewers.
- Use only in a well-ventilated location. Avoid all unnecessary exposure. Employees should thoroughly wash hands with soap and water after handling this material. Do not eat or drink while handling this material.
Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities
- Store containers in a cool, dry location, away from direct sunlight, sources of intense heat, or where freezing is possible. Store containers away from incompatible chemicals. Keep container tightly closed when not in use.
- Suitable packaging: Steel drums. Stainless steel. Do not use plastic containers.

Exposure controls / personal protection
Engineering controls
- Ensure there is adequate ventilation to keep exposure below the DNELs. Use LEV if required. See Exposure Scenarios for more information. Ensure lighting and electrical equipment are not a source of ignition.
Respiratory protection
- Not normally required. If adequate ventilation is unavailable, use approved air-purifying respirator with organic vapour cartridge or canister (type A filter or appropriate combined filter (e.g. where aerosols are in use, or smoke and mist occur, A-P2), in compliance with EN 141.). Self-contained breathing apparatus must be available in case of emergency.
Hand Protection
- Wear suitable gloves. PVC or rubber gloves may be suitable, but manufacturer’s recommendations should always be checked. Change gloves in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations. If gloves are damaged during use, remove immediately and wash hands before replacing with new gloves.
Eye protection
- Wear safety goggles giving protection against liquid droplets/splashes and meeting standard BS EN166 3, when handling this product.
Skin protection
- Solvent resistant protective clothing. Protective clothing with elasticated cuffs and closed neck. Boots made of PVC. These should be changed after use or if contaminated. Wash before re-use.
Environmental exposure controls
- Do not flush into surface water or sanitary sewer system.
- Do not allow material to contaminate ground water system.

Disposal considerations
Waste treatment methods
- Waste should be treated in a manner that complies with local regulations. Advice should be sought from local agencies.
- Recover and recycle product if possible. If recovery and recycling are not possible, dispose of by incineration.
- Empty containers should be taken for recycling, recovery, or disposal through suitably qualified or licensed contractor. Empty containers may contain residue and can be dangerous.. DO NOT cut, drill, grind, or expose such containers to heat, flame, sparks, static electricity, or other sources of ignition as they may explode.
