Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The lower and upper explosive limits of propene are 2-11 % by volume.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
extremely flammable

Additional information

No information on the methods used is available. However, this information is taken from the CRC Handbook (Lide, 2008) which is a peer reviewed handbook and so can be considered reliable and suitable for use as the key study for this endpoint. The supporting study (O'Neil, 2006) is also a peer reviewed handbook and reports lower and upper explosion limits of 2.4 and 10.3 vol%, respectively, which supports the value reported in the key study.

This endpoint will result in a classification of Category 1 for flammable gases with a hazard statement of extremely flammable gas.

Justification for classification or non-classification

According to the CLP legislation (EC/1272/2008) propene should be classified as a Category 1 flammable gas with the hazard statement 'extremely flammable gas' because it is a gas at 20 oC and standard pressure of 101.3 kPa and is ignitable when in a mixture of 13% or less by volume in air. According to the Dangerous Substances Directive (67/548/EEC) propene should be classified as R12 Extremely flammable.
