Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

Based on results of a test for ready biodegradability (ISO 14593:2005, OECD 310), Zorgol 48 can be assessed to be inherently biodegradable.

For assessment of the biodegradability of Zorgol 48 (1-Hexanol, 2-ethyl-, manuf. of, by-products from, distn. Residues) a test for ready biodegradability is available

 

In a sealed vessels ready biodegradability test according to ISO Norm 14593:2005 and OECD test guideline 310, Zorgol 48 (1-Hexanol, 2-ethyl-, manuf. of, by-products from, distn. Residues) (2.98 mg C/L) was incubated at ca. 20°C for 28 days with activated sludge from a mostly domestic sewage treatment plant. Formation of CO2 was determined at seven time points by measuring inorganic carbon of test medium after adjustment of pH by adding 7M NaOH to thetest vessels.

 

Validity criteria of the test are met. No toxicity of test substance to sludge microorganisms was observed.

 

Biodegradation of Zorgol 48 started with a lag phase of about 5 days and reached a plateau of ca. 50 to 55% after 16 days. Pass levels for ready biodegradability are not met. Thus Zorgol 48 is not readily biodegradable (Muckle/Laus, 2010). But it can be considered as inherently biodegradable.
