First-aid measures

Skin contact: Remove all contaminated clothes and footwear immediately unless stuck to skin.

Drench the affected skin with running water for 10 minutes or longer if substance is still

on skin. Obtain medical attention.

Eye contact: Bathe the eye with running water for 15 minutes. Transfer to hospital for specialist

examination.

Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting. If conscious, give half a litre of water to drink immediately. If

unconscious and breathing is OK, place in the recovery position. Seek medical advice

immediately.

Inhalation: Remove casualty from exposure ensuring one's own safety whilst doing so. If

unconscious and breathing is OK, place in the recovery position. If unconscious, check

for breathing and apply artificial respiration if necessary. Seek medical attention

immediately.

Fire-fighting measures

Extinguishing media: Suitable extinguishing media for the surrounding fire should be used. Water spray.

Carbon dioxide. Dry chemical powder. Use water spray to cool containers.

Exposure hazards: Very toxic. May evolve toxic fumes of sulfur oxides in a fire. May produce toxic fumes of

chlorine in a fire.

Advice for fire-fighters: Wear self-contained breathing apparatus. Wear protective clothing to prevent contact

with skin and eyes.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions: Do not attempt to take action without suitable protective clothing.

Evacuate the area immediately. If outside do not approach from downwind. Turn leaking

containers leak-side up to prevent the escape of liquid. Remove all incompatible

materials.

Environmental precautions: Do not discharge into drains or rivers. Contain the spillage using bunding. Alert the

neighbourhood to the presence of fumes or gas.

Handling and storage

Handling requirements: Ensure there is sufficient ventilation of the area. Avoid the formation or spread of mists in

the air. Ensure high standards of hygiene and housekeeping. Handle in a fume

cupboard in the laboratory.

Storage conditions: Store in cool, well ventilated area. Keep container tightly closed. This product should be

used as soon as possible after receipt and should not be stored for prolonged periods

Suitable packaging: Store in glass-lined mild steel tanks. High density polythene drums are only suitable for

Exposure controls / personal protection

Engineering measures: Ensure there is sufficient ventilation of the area. In the laboratory, handle in a chemical

fume hood.

Respiratory protection: Air supplied breathing apparatus will be required if closed systems or effective local

exhaust ventilation cannot be provided. Self-contained breathing apparatus must be

available in case of emergency.

Hand protection: Protective gloves. PVC gloves.

Eye protection: Safety glasses with side-shields. Safety goggles. Ensure eye bath is to hand.

Skin protection: Impermeable protective clothing. Ensure safety shower is to hand.

Stability and reactivity

Chemical stability: Stable under normal conditions.

Conditions to avoid:  Water.  Bases.  Oxidising agents.  Reducing agents.  Amines. Metals.

Haz. decomp. products: In combustion emits toxic fumes of carbon dioxide / carbon monoxide. In combustion

emits toxic fumes of sulphur oxides. In combustion emits toxic fumes of hydrogen

chloride.

Disposal considerations

Disposal operations: Incineration on land.

Disposal of packaging: Empty containers are still hazardous and should be decontaminated and disposed of in

accordance with local regulations.
