Description of key information

Benzene causes adverse effects on the haematopoietic system of animals and in humans. This resulted in a harmonised classification as repaeted dose toxicant (STOT RE1).

Studies on CS2 have revealed adverse effects on the hematological system and neuropathological effects. This also resulted in a harmonised classification as repaeted dose toxicant (STOT RE1).

Justification for classification or non-classification

Benzene causes adverse effects on the haematopoietic system of animals and in humans. This resulted in a harmonised classification as repaeted dose toxicant (STOT RE1).

Studies on CS2 have revealed adverse effects on the hematological system and neuropathological effects. This also resulted in a harmonised classification as repaeted dose toxicant (STOT RE1).

Based on a significant content of both substances in benzol forerunnings (coal) they both have to be classified as STOT RE1: "Causes damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure."
