Since no studies investigating the ready biodegradability of Fatty acids, C8-10 (even numbered) and C16 and C18-unsatd., esters with Neopentylglycol (CAS No. former 85186-86-3) are available, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5, a read across to the structurally related category member Fatty acids, C8-10 and C18-unsatd., esters with neopentyl glycol (CAS No. 85186-86-3) was conducted. The two UVCB substances are esters of neopentyl glycol with a very similar composition of fatty acids. Both contain saturated C8 -C10 and C16 -C18 fatty acids and unsaturated C18 fatty acids. The read-across substance additionally contains C12 -C14 fatty acids. Since the read-across substance is readily biodegradable, Fatty acids, C8-10 and C18-unsatd., esters with neopentyl glycol (CAS No. former 85186-86-3) is expected to be readily biodegradable as well. Furthermore, as can be seen in the data matrix of the category justification in Section 13, all reliable data in the category support the biodegradability assessment, by showing a consistent pattern of results.

The key ready biodegradability study carried out with Fatty acids, C8-18 and C18-unsatd., esters with neopentyl glycol (CAS No. 85186-86-3), was performed following the OECD Guideline 301 B (Häner, 2006). Activated sludge from the aeration tank of a municipal waste water treatment plant was used as inoculum. During the 28-day test period, biodegradation reached 90.2%, based on CO2 evolution, and the 10-day window criterion was met.

Thus, based on theabove mentioned results, and due to the structural and profile similarities of the substances, as are explained in the overall endpoint summary (IUCLID Chapter 5), Fatty acids, C8-10 (even numbered) and C16 and C18-unsatd., esters with Neopentylglycol (CAS No. former 85186-86-3) can be considered readily biodegradable.
