Testing for toxicity to terrestrial organisms is not considered necessary because:

·        The substance hydrolyses rapidly and the silicon-containing hydrolysis products have a log Kow <3, therefore, partitioning to the terrestrial compartment is expected to be minimal.

·        The substance hydrolyses very rapidly to hydrogen chloride and silanediol. Silanediol reacts further to give monosilicic acid, Si(OH)4, and amorphous polysilicic acid. The effects of hydrogen chloride are limited to pH effects and not relevant in correctly buffered media. Monosilicic acid is a naturally-occurring substance which is not harmful to aquatic organisms at relevant concentrations. Monosilicic acid is the major bioavailable form of silica for aquatic organisms and plays an important role in the biogeochemical cycle of silicon (Si).
