- Endpoint:
- substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water
- Justification for type of information:
- JUSTIFICATION FOR DATA WAIVING
From the expert statement (see Data Source):
The molecular structure of the test item does not contain groups that might lead to ignition in contact with water and/or to the evolution of a flammable gas. Moreover the test item was dissolved in water during the determination of the water solubility. It demonstrated that the test item does not ignite spontaneously in contact with water. In conclusion, Oxacycloheptadecan-2-one is considered ‘not highly flammable’ in contact with water. - Reason / purpose for cross-reference:

- Endpoint:
- flammable solids
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- 12 December 2015 - 23 May 2016
- Reliability:
- 1 (reliable without restriction)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- guideline study
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
- Version / remarks:
- 2008
- Deviations:
- no
- Qualifier:

- Guideline:
- UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Test N.1 (Test method for readily combustible solids)
- Version / remarks:
- Rev. 5 (2009)
- Deviations:
- no
- GLP compliance:
- yes
- Specific details on test material used for the study:
- Test substance was heated at a temperature of 38.3°C and homogenized by stirring.
- Key result
- Test procedure:
- burning rate test: preliminary screening test
- Remarks on result:
- substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period
- Interpretation of results:
- other: not classified based on GHS / CLP criteria
- Conclusions:
- The substance was determined to be not highly flammable.
- Executive summary:
The flammability of the solid substance was determined in a GLP study according to EC A.10 and UN Test N.1. In the preliminary screening test, the substance did not ignite. No propagation of combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the train was observed within the test period. The substance was therefore determined to be not highly flammable (not readily combustible).
- Endpoint:
- pyrophoric solids
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
- Justification for type of information:
- JUSTIFICATION FOR DATA WAIVING
From the expert statement (see Data Source):
The molecular structure of the test item does not contain groups that might lead to ignition in contact with air. Moreover the test item was handled under normal laboratory conditions during the determination of physico-chemical properties (e.g. flammability test). It demonstrated that the test item does not ignite in contact with air.
In conclusion, Oxacycloheptadecan-2-one has no pyrophoric properties. - Reason / purpose for cross-reference:

In contact with the flame of the gas burner the test item melted and turned into a colourless residue. Grey smoke was observed. After removal of the ignition source, no propagation of combustion of the test item was observed.
Description of key information
The substance is not highly flammable/not readily combustible (EC A.10 and UN Test N.1: preliminary screening test).
The substance has no pyrophoric properties and is not highly flammable in contact with water (based on experience in handling and on structural features).
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Flammability:
- not classified
Additional information
Justification for classification or non-classification
- Because the substance is not readily combustible in the UN N.1 test, no classification is required for the CLP hazard 'Flammable solid'.
- Based on experience in handling and based on structural features, no classification is required for the CLP hazards 'Pyrophoric solids' and 'Substances which in contact with water emits flammable gases'.
- As the melting point of the substance is below 160°C, the substance does not need to be considered for the CLP hazard 'Self-heating substance'.
