Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

N,N-dibutylformamide is considered to be acutely harmful to aquatic organisms.

Additional information

Acute tests on fish, daphnids, algae and microorganisms were performed to examine the aquatic toxicity of N,N-dibutylformamide (CAS 761-65-9).

Acute toxicity to fish:

The acute toxicity to fish was studied in a flow-through test according ot APHA with Pimephales promelas (Brooke et al., 1984). The LC50 was determined to be 89.3 mg/L (nominal, analytically verified).

N,N-dibutylformamide is considered to be acutely harmful to fish.

Acute toxicity to aquatic invertebrates:

For assessment of the acute toxicity of N,N-dibutylformamide (CAS 761-65-9) to aquatic invertebrates was estimated by using the OECD QSAR Toolbox v4.4. The 48-h EC50 was determined to be 59.2 mg/L.

N,N-dibutylformamide is concluded to be acutely harmful to aquatic invertebrates.

Toxicity to algae and cyanobacteria:

The toxicity of the substance to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria was assessed in a study under static conditions according to the DIN 38412 L9 (equal to OECD 201). The study was statistically re-evaluated using ToxRat Pro v3.3. The 72-h EC50 (growth rate) was determined to be 484 mg/L (nominal). The 72-h EC10 (growth rate) was determined to be 111 mg/L (nominal).

The substance is assessed to be acutely not harmful to algae with high probability.

Toxicity to aquatic microorganisms:

The inhibitory effect of N,N-dibutylformamide has been investigated in three studies. The effect of respiration activity of activated sludge from a domestic sewage treatment plant was investigated in two studies following ISO 8192, (BASF AG, 1989). The resulting lowest (3 h) EC20 value was greater than 500 mg/L.

Additionally, in an oxygen consumption test using Pseudomonas putida (ROBRA test) an EC10 of 1580 mg/L was determined (BASF AG, 1989; 89/0729).

The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when the substance is introduced in appropriately low concentrations.

Aquatic invertebrates turned out to be the most sensitive trophic level: 48-h EC50 = 59.2 mg/L. N,N-dibutylformamide is considered to be acutely harmful to aquatic organisms.
