Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Conclusions:
Tests done according to standard protocol. Good quality and considered useful for setting the reference value for acute and chronic ecotoxicity
Executive summary:

Tests done according to standard protocol. Good quality and considered useful for setting the reference value for acute aquatic ecotoxicity.

For acute, the 72-h EC50 for growth rate was 206.7 µg GeO2/L, or 143 µg Ge/L.

For chronic, the 72-h EC10 for growth rate was 100.3 µg GeO2/L, or 70 µg Ge/L.

Description of key information

Diatomeae were most sensitive taxonomic group.

The lowest reliable EC50 and NOEC values were observed on the freshwater diatomea Navicula pellicullosa (Fraunhofer 2018):

-acute EC50: 0.143 mg Ge/L

-NOEC: 0.0.70 mg Ge/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
0.143 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
0.07 mg/L

Additional information

Ecotoxicity studies were conducted with GeO2 as test substance. Diatoms and marine algae were the most sensitive species. Data on many diatomeae species were available and used for PNEC deivation.
