Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The NOEC for silver cyanide is predicted to be 0.0094 mg/L. Acute toxicity to microorganisms is predicted using a mixture toxicity approach, based on acute ecotoxicity data for silver and cyanide and speciation predictions for silver cyanide.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

A calculation approach has been used in order to determine the acute toxicity of silver cyanide to microorganisms. As a large body of ecotoxicity data is already available for silver and cyanide, the toxicity of silver cyanide is predicted based on the measured values for silver and cyanide and the speciation of the precious metal cyanide substance in the test solution.

The results of the mixture toxicity assessment were validated using measured results from an activated sludge respiration inhibition test with another substance containing silver and cyanide, potassium dicyanoargentate. There is a margin of safety of a factor of 45 between the predicted NOEC for potassium dicyanoargentate and the measured 3-hour NOEC from the test. This is likely to be due to the use of non-standard test species and studies of much longer duration than the standard tests as the basis for the modelling.
