No aquatic toxicity data are available for the registration substance dimethoxy(methyl)vinylsilane. The substance rapidly hydrolyses in water to form methylvinylsilanediol and methanol (half-life 18.3 minutes at pH 7, 25°C). Reliable read-across data has been selected based on the properties of the silanol hydrolysis product.

A reliable short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates test result is available from the analogous read-across substance dimethoxydimethylsilane (CAS 1112-39-6), where a 48-hour EC50 value of >100 mg/l and NOEC of <10 mg/l have been determined for the effects of this substance on the mobility of Daphnia magna. It is likely that the test organisms were exposed to the hydrolysis products of the read-across substance, i.e. dimethylsilanediol (CAS 1066-42-8) and methanol.

Two reliable toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria test results are available for substances that can be considered analogues of the hydrolysis product of the registered substance (methylvinylsilanediol): dichloro(methyl)(vinyl)silane (CAS 124-70-9) and dimethylsilanediol (CAS 1066-42-8):

A 72-hour EC50 value of >100 mg/l and NOEC of ≥100 mg/l have been determined for effects of dichloro(methyl)(vinyl)silane (CAS 124-70-9) on growth rate and biomass of Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata, based on nominal concentrations. It is likely that the test organisms were exposed to the hydrolysis products of the read-across substance, i.e. methylvinylsilanediol (CAS 3959-12-4) and hydrochloric acid. Dichloro(methyl)(vinyl)silane and dimethoxymethylvinylsilane both rapidly hydrolyse to the same silanol hydrolysis product.

A 72-hour EC50 value of >118 mg/l and NOEC of 118 mg/l have been determined for the effects of dimethylsilanediol (CAS 1066-42-8) on growth rate and biomass of Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata based on mean measured concentrations of the test substance.

To provide evidence that the vinyl side chain does not contribute to toxicity of the registered substance read-across from trimethoxyvinylsilane (CAS 2768-02-7) has been used:

A 48-hour EC50 of 169 mg/l has been determined for the effects of trimethoxyvinylsilane on mobility of Daphnia magna.

A 7-day EC50 of 210 mg/l and NOEC of ca. 25 mg/l have been determined for the effects of trimethoxyvinylsilane on growth rate of the freshwater algae Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata.
