Results and discussion

Results:
Measured airborne concentrations of acrylonitrile were below the measurement limit (10 μg/m3) in all subjects (ABS moulding).

ABS moulding: The results showed very low concentrations of acrylonitrile. 100% of the results were below the measurement limit (10 µg/m³).

Rubber moulding: The airborne PAHs concentration levels found in the 19 study subjects were low. Urinary napthalene and urinary phenanthrene were found to be present in the highest amounts. The other low-boiling point urinary PAHs, whilst present in most samples, showed levels below 10 ng/l. High-boiling point urinary PAHs were always found in amounts lower than the measurement limit. No differences were observed between smokers and non-smokers.

Executive summary:

This study was carried out in the plastic and rubber moulding industry, in the “Professional Cancer Prevention Project” with the objective of developing and implementing protocols for evaluating exposure to carcinogens through the biological monitoring. The carcinogenic substances identified were: 1,3-butadiene, acrylonitrile and styrene in moulding ABS, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in moulding rubber. Only for some of these substances biological indicators are available. The limited exposure to airborne chemicals in moulding ABS and the intrinsic characteristics of biological indicators available for 1-3 butadiene have determined the non-applicability of biological monitoring to this situation. Exposure in the rubber moulding was studied in 19 subjects applying the determination not metabolized PAH in urine. The levels of these indicators were similar to those measured in other groups of subjects without occupational exposure to PAH, confirming a low airborne contamination in this workplace.
