The aquatic toxicity of ethylbenzene was evaluated from acute toxicity tests to freshwater and marine fishes, numerous invertebrates and from a long term toxicity testing with Ceriodaphnia dubia. For fish, the 96-hr LC50 values were 4.2 and 5.1 mg/L for rainbow trout (Onchorhynchus mykiss) and the Atlantic Silverside (Menidia menidia). Acute toxicity to the freshwater invertebrate, Daphnia magna, was reported as a 48-hr EC50 of 1.8 mg/L ethylbenzene, while the marine invertebrate, mysid shrimp, generated a 96-hr LC50 of 2.6 mg/L. Chronic toxicity testing with Ceriodaphnia dubia resulted in an NOEC of 1.0 mg/L (0.96 mg/L). The NOEC value of 1.0 mg/L represents the lowest toxicity endpoint available for ethylbenzene. Numerous algae toxicity data were available. The lowest EC50 value for algae was determined for Selenastrum capricornutum (now known as Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata) and was reported as 3.6 mg/L with an NOEC of 3.4 mg ethylbenzene/L. The inhibition of ammonia consumption was used as parameter for toxic inhibition of the nitrifying organism,Nitrosomonas, by ethylbenzene and the 24 hour EC50 was 96 mg/L.
