Description of key information

Flammability (hexamethyldisiloxane): highly flammable

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
highly flammable

Additional information

The flammability of liquids is assessed by reference to the flash point.

There is no indication on the basis of structure and experience in handling and the use that the substance is flammable in contact with air or water.

Therefore, in accordance with Section 2 of REACH Annex XI, the flammability study does not need to be conducted.

Lower flammability limits of between 1.0 – 1.5 %v/v and upper flammability limits of 14.65 – 38.0 %v/v were reported in secondary literature (company product literature / MSDS). The original references were not available for review and no further information is available.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The substance is classified R11 (Highly Flammable) according to Directive 67/548/EEC and Flammable Liquid Category 2 (H225: Highly flammable liquid and vapour) according to EC Regulation 1272/2008. This is on the basis of a flash point of -6°C and a boiling point of 100.5°C.
