Additional information
For this substance there is one study available resulting to very slight to moderate dermal effects. After 7 days, only slight scaliness was still observed in all (six) rabbits. Although observation period was too short, these skin reactions were considered to be reversible. According to GHS, these results should lead to classification as Cat. 3 (mild irritant).
However, for the group of alkylnitriles two further GLP studies are available that are relevant for the classification of all members of this category. It concerns a study on dodecanenitrile and tallownitrile, which are both performed according to OECD 404 and EC B.4. The results from these studies indicate that both substances dodecanenitrile and tallownitrile are irritating to skin, requiring classification as Cat.2 for GHS. Dodecanenitrile is representative for the substances in the category of alkylnitriles with the relative shorter alkyl lengths such as coconitrile, whereas tallownitrile is representative for the substances in this category with on average longer chain lengths. With two studies clearly resulting to dermal irritation requiring classification, and one study resulting to mild dermal irritation, the weight of evidence indicates that this substance need to be classified irritating to skin (GHS Cat.2).
Although irritating to the skin, none of the in vivo eye irritation studies performed on the various alkyl nitriles indicated a concern for eye irritation.
There is no information on possible respiratory irritation. Based on the available information on skin and eye irritation, alkylnitriles are not expected to pose a great concern in this respect. Moreover, based on the very low vapour pressure and water solubility, respiratory irritation is not likely to occur.

Justification for classification or non-classification
Based on weight of evidence following two appropriately performed studies on relevant substances that indicate that alkylnitriles are irritating to the skin, and a preference for a classification resulting to the highest level of protection, the substance coconitrile should be classified for CLP as dermal irritant, Cat.2.
Coconitrile was not irritating to rabbit eyes.
