A closed bottle test according to OECD guideline 301D demonstrated that zirconium acetate is readily biodegradable, fulfilling the 10-d time window criterion (Clarke, 2000 - Klimisch 1). This biodegradability result refers to the organic part of the molecule (acetate), because zirconium itself is not biodegradable (inorganic). Since biodegradability testing is not required for inorganics (Column 2 of REACH Annex VII and IX) and the organic part (acetate) has been demonstrated to be readily biodegradable, no further biodegradation testing is required (simulation tests in water, sediment, and soil) (Column 2 of REACH Annex IX).
