Description of key information

The short-term toxicity to the aquatic environment of BPA 1-4.5EO was investigated using reliable studies on the substance and BPA 2EO. Short-term toxicity studies on BPA 1-4.5EO indicated that fish was the most sensitive species with a 96-hour LC50 of 64 mg/L, obtained from a GLP-compliant short-term toxicity study performed on Oncorhynchus mykiss according to the OECD Testing Guideline 203.

Aquatic toxicity studies on BPA 2EO showed lower EC50 or LC50 than those obtained on BPA 1-4.5EO for the three trophic levels with algae identified as the most sensitive species with an EC50 of 17.1 mg/L based on growth rate. It was concluded that BPA 2EO was more toxic than BPA 1-4.5EO to fish, aquatic invertebrates, and algae.

Considering that the 96-hour LC50 for fish of BPA 1 -4.5EO is above 1 mg/L, the registered substance does not meet the criteria for classification as acute toxic to the aquatic environment in accordance with Regulation (EC) N° 1272/2008.

There is no available data on the chronic toxicity of the registered substance to the aquatic environment. The Chemical Safety Assessment conducted according to Annex I of REACH did not indicate a need to investigate further the effects to the aquatic environment. Therefore no long-term toxicity testing on aquatic species was performed in accordance with Annex IX, Column 2, of REACH.

 

Considering that the 96-hour LC50 for fish of BPA 1 -4.5EO  is comprised between 10 and 100 mg/L and the substance is not ‘rapidly biodegradable’, the registered substance meets the criteria for classification as Aquatic Chronic 3; H412.

 

The toxicity of BPA 1-4.5EO to STP microorganisms was assessed using data on Grade 6.3EO of the substance. The study gave a 30-minute EC20 of 230 mg/L based on respiration inhibition. It is concluded that the registered substance is not toxic to STP microorganisms. These results do not impact on the classification of BPA 1-4.5EO.

Additional information
