2011-07-15 - 2011-07-19
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.12 (Flammability (Contact with Water))

no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Specific details on test material used for the study:
- Name of test material (as cited in study report): Jeffcat NMM
- Physical state: Liquid
- Analytical purity: 99.54%
- Purity test date: 01-06-2007
- Lot/batch No.: LL077604
Key result
Test procedure:
step 1
Identity of evolved gas:
not applicable as no gas evolved
Remarks on result:
no reaction with water observed
Key result
Test procedure:
step 2
Identity of evolved gas:
not applicable as no gas evolved
Remarks on result:
no reaction with water observed

Test results - Initial tests:

No gas generation or spontaneous ignitions were observed during any of the tests.

Test results - Final test:

No gas generation or spontaneous ignitions were observed during the replicate tests. The sample does not generate flammable gases in contact with water.

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
No gas generation or spontaneous ignitions were observed during any of the tests. The sample does not generate flammable gases in contact with water.
Endpoint:
pyrophoric liquids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2011-07-12
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.13 (Pyrophoric Properties of Solids and Liquids)
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Specific details on test material used for the study:
- Name of test material (as cited in study report): Jeffcat NMM
- Physical state: Liquid
- Analytical purity: 99.54%
- Purity test date: 01-06-2007
- Lot/batch No.: LL077604
Key result
Test procedure:
ignition time on contact with air
Remarks:
Ignition on contact with air refers to either Pyrophoric solids or Pyrophoric liquids depending on physical state (migrated information).
Remarks on result:
no ignition on contact with air (not further specified)

As the first test was negative, the second test was also performed.

No ignition or charring was observed during any test. The sample is therefore not a pyrophoric liquid.

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
No ignition or charring was observed during any test. The substance is therefore not a pyrophoric liquid.
Endpoint:
flammable solids
Data waiving:
study technically not feasible
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is a liquid

Description of key information

The test substance is concluded not to be pyrophoric, nor flammable in contact with water following GLP studies in accordance with EC test methods A.12 and A.13 (Younis, 2011). Based on its flashpoint however the substance should be regarded as highly flammable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
flammable

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

The flash-point of NMM was determined to be 12.5 °C at 101.9 kPa and is therefore within the range relevant for classification and labelling under the CLP (<60 °C).

NMM should be classified as a category 2 flammable liquid with hazard statement H225: Highly flammable liquid and vapour (flashpoint < 23 °C and initial boiling point > 35 °C).

NMM is concluded not to have pyrophoric properties nor to be flammable in contact with water.
