In a guinea pig maximation test (GPMT, Magnusson/Kligman test) (BASF AG, 1997) with Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate in water, young adult Pirbright-Hartley guinea pigs (30 females) were tested.
The intradermal induction with 5% test substance preparations caused slight to well-defined signs of skin irritation in all test group animals. After the percutaneous induction with a 50% test substance preparation incrustation, partially open (caused by the intradermal induction) could be observed in addition to well-defined erythema and slight edema in all test group animals. Two challenges were performed 14 and 21 days after the percutaneous induction. After the first challenge with a 50% test substance preparation very slight to well-defined skin reactions were observed in 3 of 23 test group animals. To confirm the absence of a skin sensitising potential a second challange was performed. In the second challenge no skin reactions were noted in either test nor the control groups.
Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate is not a sensitizer.

One guinea pig maximation test was conducted with Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate. Very slight to well -defined skin reactions were observed after the first challenge whereas after the second challenge no skin reactions were detected. In Summary Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate does not show a sensitising effect to the skin.
Justification for classification or non-classification
Based on the results Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate is classified as not dermally sensitisizing according to EU Directive 67/548/EC amended and repealed by EU Regulation No.1272/2008 and CLP.
