In a GLP conform study according to OECD guideline 203, the substance was tested as WAFs for its acute toxicity to the zebra-fish over a period of 96 hours in a static system (RCC, 1996).
This study examined three WAFs with loadings of 100, 33 and 10 mg/L on groups of ten fish per loading. Because of the large number of components present in the test article, no complete quantitative analysis could be performed. Instead, a HPLC profile of the UVabsorbing components was done in a separate study.
No mortality of fish occurred at any of the tested WAFs, nor in the untreated control.
No clinical signs (sublethal effects) were observed in the control group and at loadings of 10 and 33 mg/l. At the 100-mg/L loading, all ten fish showed light clinical signs in comparison to the fish in the control group, such as hypoactivity between 24 and 72 hours of exposure, and remaining at the bottom of the tank between 24 and 96 hours of exposure.
Based on the above observations and expressed as loading concentrations, after 96 hours of exposure the LC0 was >=100 mg/L, and the LC50 was >100 mg/L.
In another study according to OECD guideline 203 with limited reported information, the test item was tested for its acute toxicity in the carp for 96 h (NOTOX 1996). The test item was dissolved in DMSO and tested in concentrations of 0.1, 1, 10 and 100 mg/L. In accordance with the study cited above, no mortality was observed in all treatments. The LC0 is therefore >= 100 mg/L and the LC50 is > 100 mg/L.
