Description of key information
According to REACH Annex IX and X, point 9.4, toxicity testing in terrestrial organisms shall be proposed if the chemical safety assessment according to Annex I indicates the need to investigate further the effects on soil organisms. However, lactic acid is practically non-toxic to aquatic organisms. Corrected for the pH effect, no hazard was identified for lactic acid/lactate. This can be safely extrapolated to the terrestrial compartment. Therefore, based on the chemical safety assessment according to Annex I, testing of short- or long-term toxicity to soil organisms is not required.
