- Under the study condition, surface tension of the aqueous solution of test substance (121.9 mg/L) was determined to be 35.2 mN/m at 20 ± 0.3˚C. As the result is less than 60 mN/m, test substance is considered to be surface active.
- Executive summary:
A study was conducted to determine the surface tension of the test substance, C18 ADBAC (active: 97.6%), using a ring method, according to OECD Guideline 115 and EU method A.5, in compliance with GLP. The surface tension of an aqueous solution of the test substance at 121.95 mg/L (verified using HPLC) was measured at 20°C by means of a tensiometer using ring method. Under the study conditions, the surface tension of the test substance was determined to be 35.2 mN/m at 20 ± 0.3˚C. As the result is less than 60 mN/m, test substance was considered to be surface active (Wannenwetsch, 2017).

Due to the complex nature and composition of the test item, it was considered not completely applicable to follow the EC A.5 and OECD 115 guidelines with regard to sample preparation. Therefore, the surface tension of a nominally 1 g/L dispersion of test item in water was used as a worst case scenario based on the maximum sample concentration specified in the guidelines. According to criteria stated in EC Method A.5, substances showing a surface tension lower than 60 mN/m under the conditions of this method should be regarded as being surface active.

Two studies were available with the test substance:
- Study 1: 35.2 mN/m at 20 ± 0.3˚C and 121.95 mg/L concentration (Wannenwetsch, 2017),
- Study 2: 40 mN/m at 20 ± 0.5˚C and 1 g/L concentration (Envigo, 2018).
The study with lower surface tension value has been taken forward for hazard/risk assessment.
