Description of key information

The inhibition of the degradation activity of activated sludge is not anticipated when introduced in appropriate low concentrations.

The changes in the respiration rate of activated sludge in presence of the test substance were investigated in a GLP study according to OECD guideline 209 [BASF SE 2015]. At test termination after 3 hours an EC10 > 1000 mg/L (nominal) was determined.

The test substance belongs to the substance category of Phthalocyanines whose category members resemble in their chemical structure as well as in their phys-chem properties. Thus, supporting information from the Phthalocyanine category was additionally used to cover this endpoint.

Phtalocyanines were proofed to be not toxic to microorganisms by several studies. The effect of the Phthalocyanines CAS 147-14-8 on the respiration rate of activated, domestic sludge were tested by a test following ISO 8192 [BASF AG 1988]. An EC20 of ca. 750 mg/l was determined after 30 min.

Furthermore the toxicity of CAS 147-14-8 to a single bacteria species i.e.Pseudomonas putidawas tested. All tests followed German standard DIN 38412 part 27. The bacterium was exposed to the substance for 30 minutes and changes in the respiration rate were recorded. Two additional studies determined an EC10 > 10000 mg/l and an EC10 of 8300 mg/l (EC50 >10000 mg/l), respectively [BASF AG 1987, 1988]. In a third study an EC50 of 190 mg/l was recorded. However, the test was performed using a solubilizer. The solubility of the Phthalocyanine CAS 1328-53-6 was also increased by a solubiliser in a test on the respiration rate ofP. putida. The test was performed according to DIN 38412 part 27 and an EC50 >10000 after 30 minutes was determined.
