Description of key information
Magnesium hydroxide is a white powder with no characteristic odour.
Magnesium hydroxide has no boiling point or melting point as in both cases reaction and/or decomposition of the test substance was observed at temperatures > 320 °C (> 593 K). Melting or boiling of the substance was not observed below the temperature at which reaction/decomposition started.
No vapour pressure was determined since the melting temperature was > 200 °C and the boiling temperature was > 300 °C
The density of magnesium hydroxide was determined to be D(4/20) : 2.41 g/cm3 at 20 °C and the MMAD was determined to be 21.601 µm.
The water solubility of Magnesium hydroxide at 20 °C was 1.78 x 10-3 g total solids/l.
Based on the molecular structure, magnesium hydroxide is not considered to be surface active.
The pH of the saturated aqueous solution at 20 °C was 8.3.
Magnesium hydroxide is not highly flammable nor flammable in contact with water or pyrophoric.
The molecular structure of Magnesium hydroxide is such that it does not contain chemical groups which are associated with explosive or oxidising properties. Therefore it is not classified as explosive or oxidising.
It is also not self ignitable as no endothermic or exothermic effect of the test substance was observed between 20 °C and 400 °C.
The partition coefficient and flash point were not determined since the test substance is inorganic.
The particle size distribution resulted in a MMAD of 21.601 µm, 34.19% by volume of the sample was seen to be < 10.000 µm
Magnesium hydroxide is no organic peroxide.
