Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

No guideline studies are available for the hydrolysis reaction of lead tetraacetate. One published reaction kinetics monitored by optical absorption spectroscopy indicates a completion after 8 minutes. Other studies indicate a much faster reaction (within seconds), but no reaction monitoring data have been published. A conservative half life time of < 8 minutes can be concluded.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Half-life for hydrolysis:
8 min
at the temperature of:
20 °C

Additional information

An evaluation of hydrolysis reactions as published between 1851 and 1969 confirms the rapid hydrolysis of lead tetraacetate in contact with water. The reaction of lead acetate with ppm concentrations of water in different solvents at room temperature was monitored with optical absorption spectroscopy. After 8 minutes the reaction was complete as indicated by a plateau in the absorption curve. The reaction curve is not given, but a conservative half life time of 8 minutes is concluded.
