Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Two types of Scales exists:
- scale/slag-type materials characterized by Worst case granulometry of D50>5000µm and D50=29µm
- dross-type materials characterized by Worst case granulometry of D50<1000µm

Additional information

For the RWC distribution patterns derived for use in the Classification (mixture toxcity rules), scales can be considered as grainy to massive materials, with the exceptions of dross-type materials were powder-forms have to be taken into consideration. This is linked to the fact that a higher solubilisation of the constituent elements/species can be assumed in the latter case.

Oral and inhalation are however major exposure routes to be taken into account for all types of scales (worst case).
