Additional information
Wash oil did not show a mutagenic potential in the Ames test. No further studies have been performed, as wash oil is considered to be a potential carcinogen based on its quinoline content (see Chapter 5.8. - Carcinogenicity). Quinoline itself has been demonstrated to be positive in various in vitro and in vivo genotoxicity tests.

Wash oil produced no mutagenicity in the Ames test. However, due to its content of 3% quinoline (classified as Muta. 2 according to CLP Regulation), wash oil is itself classified as Muta. 2.

Justification for classification or non-classification
Quinoline is classified as Cat. 2 mutagen according to Annex VI, Table 3.1 of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP regulation) as amended by Regulation (EC) No 790/2009. It is present in wash oil in concentrations clearly above 1 % triggering classification of wash oil as mutagenic Cat. 2 (CLP Regulation, Chapter 3.5, Table 3.5.2).
