Description of key information
Three studies - conducted in three different species - are available to assess acute toxicity of propylene glycol methyl ether to fish.

A non-GLP-study (according to DIN 38412) with Leuciscus idus was carried out under static conditions at 20-22°C. Based on nominal concentrations of propylene glycol methyl ether, the 96-hour LC50 was calculated to be 6812 mg/l. The No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC) was determined to be 4640 mg/l. For a GLP-study according to an ASTM method the 96-hour LC50 based on nominal concentrations of propylene glycol methyl ether was determined to be 20800 mg/l. According to the Directive 92/CEE, method C1 “acute toxicity of fish”, a water temperature between 20 and 24°C is recommended for Pimephales promelas. Therefore, this test can be considered as valid but with restrictions. A non-GLP study similar to OECD guideline 203 studied the acute toxicity of propylene glycol methyl ether to Oncorhynchus mykiss. The exposure concentration was 1000 mg/l. Based on this nominal concentration, the 96-hour LC50 was determined to be superior to 1000 mg/l since no mortality was observed throughout the test.
The 96-hour LC50 (6812 mg/l) will be taken into account for the risk assessment.
