In Step 1 and Step 2 (Preliminary test) there was no evolution of gas and no ignition observed.
Results for the maximum rate of gas evolution:
The test procedure was performed in triplicate.
Test no.1: 0.72 l/(kg∙h)
Test no.2: 0.56 l/(kg∙h)
Test no.3: 0.72 l/(kg∙h)
The highest amount of gas was 18 ml and this result was obtained within the first hour of measuring. Within the remaining time period of 6 h (prescribed time of 7 h in total) no further gas evolution occurred.
From the results (< 1 l/(kg∙h)) it is obvious that the substance does not fulfil the criteria of the UN transport class 4.3.
Tests with a wet zone showed, that the propagation of the flame was not stopped by the moistened substance.
In contact with water, gaseous methanole is formed (> 1l/kg*s) without self ignition. Other studies report self ignition.
The explosion limits cited from: OECD SIDS Methanol (2004).
Lower explosion limit: ca. 5.5 %
Upper explosion limit: ca. 55 %
flammable when exposed to heat or flame.
Description of key information
Highly flammable. Burning time 7-8 s. Positive outcome for self-heating.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Flammability:
- flammable
Additional information
No ignition on contact with air.
Tests with a wet zone showed that the propagation of the flame was not stopped by the moistened substance. On contact with water substance liberates highly flammable gases. Easy reaction with water but no spontaneous ignition of the evolved gas.
Justification for classification or non-classification
Classification according to regulation (EC) 1272/2008, Annex VI, No. 2.7.2.3: Cat. 1, H228, Danger, flammable solid, and Self-Heat.1 (H251).
