Vienna White

Test system

Vehicle:
water
Controls:
other: untreated eye of same animal
Amount / concentration applied:
- approx. 200 mg of the test substance were applied
- concentration: 50 % in water
Duration of treatment / exposure:
- the eyes were not washed out after 24 hours
Observation period (in vivo):
- 2 days
Number of animals or in vitro replicates:
2
Details on study design:
Before OECD Guideline 405 was established, eye irritation was tested using an internal method (BASF test).

White Vienna rabbits were used. 200 mg of the test substance were applied to the conjunctival sac of one eye of 2 animals. The saline-treated adjacent eye served as a control.

The animals were observed several times on the treatment day.

The eyes were not washed out after 24 hours as specified in OECD Guideline 405 and the grading of eye effects was done according a BASF scoring system, that has been converted into the presently used numerical grading system.
