Additional information
To describe the aquatic toxicity to green algae studies with three single EDTA metal complexes are available (FeEDTANa, CAS 15708-41-5; MnEDTANa2, CAS 15375-84-5; CoEDTANa2, CAS 15137-09-4). In some studies slight effects on the growth of the algae were determined. It is known that such effects can result from the interaction of the complexing agent (EDTA) with micronutrients of the culture medium. Hence, algae tests with complexing agents may yield apparent results under standardized guideline conditions that are more or less severe than the true toxicity (see Guidance on Hazard to the Aquatic Environment Globally Harmonized System GHS Annex 9 A9.3.3.4, 2007). To specify this impact a series of preliminary tests with enriched medium nutrients were conducted for MnEDTANa2 (CAS 15375-84-5) [Akzo Nobel, 2009]. Thus the final test was conducted with an adequate adjustment of the test medium. Ultimately it can be concluded that all three tested EDTA metal complexes show no considerable toxic effect to aquatic green algae. The lowest effect value is reported for the EDTA manganese complex with an 72-hours EC10 of 42.8 mg/L [Akzo Nobel, 2009].
